What Toggl Track does well

Toggl Track is the most polished timer in the category. One-click start, idle detection, an autotracker that catches the app you switched to, and calendar integrations for Google and Outlook. Freelancers pick it over Hubstaff or Time Doctor because Toggl doesn't take screenshots or track keystrokes.

The free tier is real. Up to 5 users, unlimited time entries, unlimited projects and clients. If you only need to know where your time goes, Toggl Free is enough.

Reports are flexible. Slice by project, client, tag or member. Export to CSV, Excel or a shareable link. For anyone whose job is answering "where did the hours go", Toggl delivers.

THE GAP

Where Toggl stops

Toggl added invoicing. It's a report export button that pushes filtered hours into an editable invoice, and admins on the Starter plan can send that data to QuickBooks.

But it feels like a report export button that grew an invoice tab. The billable rates that make invoices meaningful sit behind Starter, at $9 per user per month. Fixed fee projects sit behind Premium, at $18 per user per month. And the invoice itself is thin. Not a client-facing PDF you'd send without editing in another tool first.

The bigger gap is what the tool doesn't think about. Toggl's unit of analysis is the project and its budget. It'll alert you when a project is 80% through its estimate. It won't tell you where you're going to land this month across all your clients. It won't tell you what's ready to invoice right now versus still in progress. It won't separate hours a client has disputed from hours you're going to bill.

The workflow most freelancers describe is the same. Filter by client, export, open a spreadsheet or another tool, retype line items, apply rates manually, round the hours, email the PDF. It works, and it's the reason you're on this page.

THE FIT

Where Tempolio fits

Tempolio is built for the freelancer who bills hourly to direct clients and closes the month by generating invoices. Tracked hours turn into an invoice inside the same tool. No CSV, no retyping, no reconciliation between two apps.

Financial Pulse is the reason to switch. Mid-month you see three numbers. What you've already earned, what's ready to invoice, and where you'll land based on your tracking pace. Toggl doesn't have this because Toggl's job is capture, not billing.

Pricing is per account, not per user. If you're a solo freelancer, you pay for one account, not one seat. Billable rates are included at every tier.

THE FINE PRINT

When NOT to choose Tempolio

Tempolio isn't the right pick for everyone. Stay on Toggl if:

• You need Toggl's autotracker or idle detection on desktop. Tempolio doesn't have those, and isn't planning to.
• You work with a team. Tempolio is built for solo freelancers. If you have collaborators tracking hours to shared projects, Toggl's team features are ahead.
• You depend on Toggl's integrations with your project management tool, like Asana, Jira or Notion. Tempolio doesn't have those.
• You track time internally and don't invoice by the hour. If billing isn't the end of your workflow, Tempolio doesn't add value.
• You only bill fixed fee projects. Tempolio's fixed fee mode is available in October 2026. Until then, hourly billing is the primary model.
